Advancing Cardiac Care
This month, we are focusing on how Ventripoint is redefining the standards of 3D echocardiography. While ultrasound is the frontline tool for cardiac assessment, the transition
from qualitative “eye-balling” to precise quantitative analysis has historically been a challenge. We explore how Knowledge-Based Reconstruction (KBR) is closing the gap between echocardiography and the gold standard of cardiac MRI (cMRI), all while streamlining the clinical workflow.
The PLUS of VMS+
Unlocking Whole-Heart Insights from a Single Scan
The VMS+ for 3D echo system offers a significant leap in efficiency by requiring only one 3D echo whole-heart scan to provide comprehensive volumetric data.
Unlike standard real-time 3D echo (RT3DE) methods that may require multiple acoustic windows or complex multi-step acquisitions, VMS+ for 3D utilizes a single “full-volume” dataset
to reconstruct the cardiac chambers. This approach is not only faster but also significantly more comfortable for patients, as it minimizes the time needed for probe manipulation and breath holding. By matching endocardial landmarks against a validated library of heart shapes, VMS+ provides reliable, non-invasive measurements that match the accuracy of cMRI. “KBR is an accurate, versatile, and time-saving method for right ventricular three-dimensional volumetry; it shows excellent reproducibility for RT3DE and CMR data sets.”*
Why This Matters
For the consultant cardiologist, the VMS+ “one scan” advantage means more than just speed. It translates to consistency and accessibility. Being able to capture all the necessary data in a
single, quick acquisition reduces operator-dependent variability and eliminates the need for the complex scheduling and sedation often required for cMRI, particularly in pediatric or high anxiety patients. This allows for highly accurate, cMRI-equivalent monitoring to be performed right at the bedside, ensuring that critical clinical decisions are based on precise data without
delaying patient care.
Tech+
The Challenge: The Quantitative Weakness of 3D Echo A known quantitative weakness of standard 3D echocardiography is its tendency to systematically underestimate ventricular
volumes and ejection fractions. This is often due to the difficulty in clearly visualizing endocardial borders in real-time or the inherent technical limitations of semiautomatic border
detection software.
The VMS+ Solution VMS+ overcomes this weakness by utilizing a proprietary KBR algorithm based on landmark-detection. By leveraging a validated MRI database of both normal and
pathological heart morphologies in adults and pediatrics, the system can calculate volumes with cMRI-equivalent accuracy across all four heart chambers—from just one 3D scan. This vendor-neutral analysis package ensures that regardless of the ultrasound hardware used, your data is accurate, reproducible, and ready for immediate clinical application.
